What's the difference between supper and dinner?
 Supper is a term for the last meal of the day. It comes from the French word for soup, since supper in an agricultural society where the main meal was lunch meant a light meal that usually consisted of soup. In the 18th century, fancier high society late-night suppers became fashionable. Today, supper is generally used to indicate an informal or light evening meal, whereas dinner has more formal implications, although the words are also used interchangeably. In Britain, Australia and New Zealand, it can also refer to a late-evening snack or a specific meal (a fish supper in the U.K. can mean a serving of fish and chips). |
