What does it mean to be a vegan?

Vegans are the most radical of vegetarians.
A vegan doesn't eat any animal-based products whatsoever, including meat and dairy products such as milk, butter, eggs or cheese. A person may choose to become a vegan because of perceived health benefits (lower cholesterol and fat consumption), religious beliefs (including some Hindus and Buddhists) ethical concerns about animal cruelty or the environment. Strict vegans extend the ban on consuming or using animal products to clothing, cosmetics, household products, leather or anything else that is not plant-based.
Vegans have to be careful to get enough protein, which can be achieved by eating a combination of legumes and grains such as rice. Prepared foods labeled "vegan" are made without animal products.
