Aviation Cocktail

The name of this feisty Depression-era cocktail is supposedly linked to air travel of the time -- a risky venture not for the faint of heart.

1 1/2 dry ounces gin
3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 dash crème de violette (optional)
Ice
1 cherry (optional)

Shake all ingredients well with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry if desired.
