The Presidente

The Presidente, or El Presidente, is a vigorous old-time cocktail that was named for a now-forgotten president of Cuba, General Carmen Menocal.

1 1/2 ounces light rum
2/3 ounce dry vermouth
1/2 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
1 dash grenadine
1 twist lemon peel
1 maraschino cherry (optional)
Ice

cocktail shaker
strainer
Shake rum, vermouth and Cointreau and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel and a maraschino cherry.
