Home-Mixed Cereal With Cranberries, Walnuts And Pecans

January 17th, 2008

Most weekday mornings I eat cereal. (Weekends I usually take the savory route.) For the past couple of years I’ve been mixing batches of cereal myself in a large tupperware container. I make a new batch every two weeks, constantly varying the ingredients to keep things interesting.

The base of the mix is often a box of Grape Nuts and a container of whole grain cereal. Then I mix in different dried fruits, nuts, seeds and supplement-type ingredients like flaxseeds, wheat germ and hemp seeds. For me, breakfast is a good meal to sneak in a wide variety of healthy things I might not otherwise work into my diet. (Plus, it makes a juicy cheesburger at lunch more enjoyable.)

This morning I put together a new batch. I started by adding the usual box of Grape Nuts and a container of Quaker rolled oats. Then I added a big handful each of dried cranberries, crushed walnuts and crushed pecans. I added about three cups of flaxseed meal, and shook the container until it all came together.

The mix is also good stirred into yogurt in the afternoon with a cup of coffee, or sprinkled over crackers spread with preserves after dinner.

This sounds like a wonderful combination, but I am not really a fan of rolled oats. Do you think I can substitute steel cut oats instead?

It seems that everyone on the blogsphere is making their own granola/müesli…
I should try it too - yours looks delicious!

Mmm…I like your suggestions for cereals—-do you usually pour on milk before eating or just add to yogurt?

  4. Cookthink: Food to fight the morning shivers Says:

[…] Over the past few days, I’ve been starting the day with a bowl of oatmeal mixed with bananas, raisins and brown sugar. Later this week, I’m going to try our recipe for Breakfast Quinoa and have a go at Brys’ granola mixed with steamed soy milk. What else can I fit in a bowl to cradle with my bare, cold hands. How do you fight off those morning shivers? […]
