Menu for Hope 4
December 10th, 2007
For the last four years, Chez Pim has been organizing the Menu for Hope, an annual raffle that brings together food bloggers from all over the globe to donate prizes and raise money in support of the UN World Food Programme in Lesotho.
Last year, the event raised over $60,000, and with the amazing prizes this year, I’m sure it’ll be an even greater success.
Here is how it works: from December 10-21 for every $10 you donate, you get a virtual raffle ticket toward a prize of your choice. You can put all your tickets towards one prize, or try for several different options. All of the money is handled by Firstgiving, and giving is very easy to do: just enter the prize codes and the number of tickets you want for each one in the “Personal Message’ box on the form (take a look below the break for visual details on how this all works).
Cookthink is offering up these prizes, but you can see all of the prizes for the east coast district at Serious Eats and the global offerings at Chez Pim.
UE36 - Vegetable Love, by Barbara Kafka
There are few names in cooking that garner greater respect than Barbara Kafka. The writer of several cookbook classics, her “Vegetable Love” is a necessary addition to any shelf. Filled with 750 recipes on vegetables from artichokes to zucchini, it also contains a “cooks guide” with advice on basic selection, preparation and consumption of all different kinds of vegetables. Not only do you get this essential volume, it will be personalized and autographed by Kafka herself! A great gift for the vegetable lover in your life.
UE38 - The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook: Stories and Recipes for Southerners and Would-be Southerners, by Matt Lee and Ted Lee
You don’t have to be southern to cook southern: that’s the story from the Lee Brothers, owners of boiledpeanuts.com and contributors to the New York Times and others. They grew up in South Carolina, but have developed a book that demystifies the southern cooking tradition and gives all of us a chance to experience both the food and the stories that go with it. The 2007 James Beard Foundation Cookbook of the Year, your copy of the Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook will be personalized and autographed by Matt and Ted.
UE37 - La Quercia Sampler
“Seeking out the best possible ingredients, produced responsibly, we craft them by hand into something that expresses our appreciation for the beauty and bounty of Iowa.” That’s the mission of La Quercia, the finest producer of cured meats in America. Their salumi — prosciutto, culaccia, speck, pancetta and guanciale — have earned high praise from the likes of Robert Parker, David Rosengarten and Jeffrey Steingarten, who wrote in Vogue last year that La Quercia produced “the best prosciutto you can get in this country, imported or domestic.” Bon Appetit named La Quercia Food Artisans of the Year 2007. This sampler basket of some of their best products will be a rich and varied addition to your cooking!
If you’d like to get some tickets, just head over to Firstgiving and make your donation - see below the break for instructions - and good luck!

[…] Last week I got a shipment of cured meats — pancetta, guanciale, prosciutto and speck — from La Quercia. While enjoyed cooking with the pancetta for last week’s root source, I was most excited to get into the guanciale, which is hard to find locally. I had seen Mario Batali (whose dad makes guanciale) make classic Spaghetti Alla Carbonara with guanciale on Molto Mario a while back. Since then I’ve been looking forward to making the classic version. Yesterday I finally did. […]
