What Are You Cooking For Derby Day?
May 1st, 2009
It’s looking like cool, damp weather in Louisville for tomorrow’s 135th running of the Kentucky Derby. Having a few friends over to watch the action? If you’re still figuring out what to serve, consider the classics, then consider varying them a little.
Drink-wise, the Mint Julep — the Derby’s official cocktail — can either warm you up or cool you down. Rob Chirico’s Mint Jolie is a new take on that classic.
After one or two of either, think about graduating to a simple bourbon and soda with a sprig of mint — 1 part bourbon to 2 parts soda over ice.

Food-wise, Derby classics include Benedictine sandwiches and Kentucky burgoo. But I’m thinking about making some cheddar sandwiches with pickled cucumbers and sweet onions and watercress and cucumber tea sandwiches to serve with drinks. And the cool Kentucky forecast has me torn between Brunswick Stew with smoked chicken or a pot of turkey and red bean chili.

What?
No hot browns, pecan bourbon pie, smoked ham or BBQ?

No plan as of yet. Except for mint juleps. I love them anytime of year.

Country ham and biscuits and chicken salad; others will be bringing Derby Pie, devilled eggs, etc. I think I will try Rob’s Mint Jolies, as well.
