The folks at yumsugar have a solid round-up of the crisis facing Italy’s producers of Parmigiano-Reggiano. What’s the problem? The wholesale price producers are getting from retailers is lower than the cost of making the cheese.

The solution? As the Los Angeles Times’ Russ Parsons reports, the Italian government has approved an OPEC-like plan that will let cheesemakers pull 100,000 wheels of cheese off the market in an attempt to drive the wholesale price back up.
