Frequently? Salt. By volume? Olive oil.
What’s the cooking sound you most love?
The sound of my husband doing the dishes.
What’s your favorite cooking smell?
My hands, after cutting herbs.
What are the qualities you most admire in a dish?
Ease, health, beauty, interest (not necessarily in that order).
What is your most treasured possession in the kitchen?
What is a dirty word in your kitchen?
Semi-homemade.
What are afraid to do in the kitchen?
Use the convection setting on my oven.
What won’t you eat?
Have you ever lost your appetite for a food you once loved?
No. But I’ve never been pregnant.
Have you ever had a religious conversion involving a food you once did not believe in?
Yes. I’ve recently found a soulmate in coconut. I like how it feels between my teeth. The sugar doesn’t hurt, either.
If you could choose one historical or living cook to make you a meal right now, who and what would it be?
I would make a croquembouche tower for my (August) birthday, with my late grandmother Merle.
Who are your favorite cookbook authors/food writers?
Alice Waters, Barbara Kingsolver, Calvin Trillin, Mark Bittman, Kathy Gunst, David Leite — just the first to come to mind.
What is your favorite food-related word?
Fat
What is your favorite food-related scene from literature or the movies?
Has to be the kitchen scene from The Little Mermaid. A singing crustacean makes everything better.
What’s your favorite food-shopping errand or journey?
Anything cheese.
To which country would you move for the food?
Move for forever? Maybe Japan.
If you wanted to seduce someone, what would you cook?
It wouldn’t be what I’d cook, it would be what I’d cook in. Next question, please.
You wish to die with what in your stomach?
A hot dog would be great.
If heaven exists, what do you hope they have on the menu?
Correct spelling.
If you died and came back as a fruit or a vegetable, which one would it be?
Have to go with that heirloom tomato called the Mortgage Lifter. But maybe that’s just a sign of the times.
What’s your poison?
Scotch.
What are you craving right now?
Vegetarian pho.

Jess… your answer, ‘correct spelling’, to the menu option had me in tears! Oh, how I can relate. Happiest of birthdays to you - I’m almost TWICE your age… enjoy your youth! One of the things that keep me ‘young’ is waking up under a tent as often as I can - going camping for the 3rd time this summer in another week… can’t wait! My only advice is to choose your campground very carefully and according to what you like, vis-a-vis, atmosphere/environment. Cheers!
